Disks for VPS/VDS: what disks are used

19.02.2023, 02:26

VPS disks are virtual disks that are created and used on a physical server to store VPS data and files. Depending on the hosting provider that provides the VPS, there may be different types of disks.

Types of disks

The main types of disks for VPS are:

1. HDD(Hard Disk Drive) - Traditional hard disk drives that are used to store data on most servers. They offer large storage capacity at a relatively low price.

2. SSD(Solid State Drive) -Solid state memory based disks that offer high speed read and write data, resulting in faster loading of applications and files.

3. NVMe(Non-Volatile Memory Express) - This is a new standard for solid state drives that offers even faster data read and write speeds than SSDs. This type of drive is most suitable for large data volumes and applications with high performance requirements.

Depending on the application requirements and available budget, you can choose the right type of disk for your VPS. However, in most cases, SSD or NVMe disks are recommended as they offer better performance and speed.

HDD

Although SSD and NVMe disks are becoming more popular in VPS hosting, HDD disks still have their advantages:

  • Storage capacity: HDD disks provide more storage capacity compared to SSD and NVMe disks at a lower cost per gigabyte. For example, vds with a large disk
  • Longevity: unlike SSD and NVMe disks, HDD disks have no limit on the number of read/write operations, which means they can last longer.
  • Cost: HDD disks typically cost less than SSD and NVMe disks, which can be an important factor, especially when dealing with large amounts of data.
  • Reliability: although SSD and NVMe disks offer faster read/write speeds, HDD disks are still considered more reliable as they are less likely to fail due to solid state memory corruption.
  • Ease of replacement: if an HDD disk fails, replacing it is usually easier and cheaper than replacing an SSD or NVMe disk.

Applications with high data read/write speed requirements, such as web servers or databases, may run faster on SSD or NVMe disks, so HDD disks may not be desirable in such cases.

SSD

SSD disks are a newer storage technology than HDD disks and offer a number of advantages that make them an attractive choice for use as storage for a VPS:

  • Fast read and write speeds: SSD disks significantly speed up the process of reading and writing data compared to HDD disks. This is especially important for applications that require fast data access, such as database storage or web servers.
  • Lower power consumption: SSD disks consume less power than HDD disks, which reduces energy costs for servers and heat, which also has a positive impact on the longevity of the equipment.
  • Greater reliability: SSD disks have fewer mechanical parts than HDD disks, so they are less prone to damage and failure.
  • Quiet operation: because SSD disks have no moving parts, they operate without noise, which can be important for use in office or residential areas.
  • Small size: SSD disks are typically more compact than HDD disks, making them more convenient for use in compact servers or virtual machines.
  • Resistant to vibration and shock: SSD disks are not sensitive to vibration and shock, so they can be used in high vibration or moving environments such as transportation.

Using SSD disks as storage for VPS can increase server performance and reliability, especially if fast data read/write speeds are important.

NVMe

NVMe(Non-Volatile Memory Express) is a new storage technology that is used to create high-performance SSD drives. Compared to traditional SSDs, NVMe has a number of advantages that make it attractive for use as storage for VPS.

The following are some of the advantages of using NVMe for VPS:

  • High read and write speed: NVMe provides high data read and write speeds that can be 5-7 times faster than conventional SSDs. This maximizes performance for applications that require fast data access, such as databases, web servers, and applications that process large amounts of data.
  • Low latency: NVMe has low latency, making it an ideal choice for applications with high I/O loads where every millisecond can make a difference.
  • Enhanced performance: NVMe can boost VPS performance, especially in applications with high I/O load, making it a great choice for use as storage for large projects and applications.
  • Energy efficiency: because NVMe uses less power than traditional SSDs, it can be more energy efficient, which helps lower energy costs for servers and reduce heating, which also has a positive impact on hardware longevity.
  • High reliability: NVMe has high reliability and durability, making it an ideal choice for use in mission-critical applications.

NVMe drives can be more expensive than traditional SSDs, so the choice of storage technology will depend on your project's specific needs and budget
